A new study documents that turning rainforests, peatlands, savannas, or grasslands into biofuel-yielding croplands emits large amounts of carbon that add to the atmosphere's already heavy burden of greenhouse gases. Deforestation currently releases hundreds of millions of tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year.
Turning pristine land into biofuel farms makes global warming worse, a new study reaffirms. The only sensible biofuel sources are waste biomass or biomass grown on lands that cannot be used for agriculture.
