The anther is the pouch-like part of a flower that holds pollen grains. It sits atop a long slender filament. Pollen is set free by the opening of the anther. The photographer, Ron Oldfield, is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Biological Sciences, Macquarie University, New South Wales, Australia. This photomicrograph was awarded Honorable Mention in the 2004 Olympus BioScapes Digital Imaging Competition.
